Ok, so it's not so much what I did that's noteworthy. It's the story behind it. Or, you tell me.
It's no secret I spent half my life mired in the boring world of insurance. A field most abhore, yet grateful to be versed in an uncertain world. There is comfort in calculating risk. Whether taking it and throwing caution to the wind. Or protecting it at all costs. Both rely on an understanding.
Mind you, I haven't missed it. In fact, I secretly hoped I'd never be staring at dual monitors again for as long as I live.
But that was before the recruiter called. THE recruiter. The one who has kept me on speed dial since 2002. And followed me through 4 different states. Staying abreast of my whereabouts offering opportunities, advice, or a recommendation. Whichever I needed.
Our last conversation took place in TX. No, I wasn't available. No, I wasn't looking. Yes, I would keep in touch. Fast forward to last week. Out of the blue I get a call. Where am I now? What am I doing? I'm in NC? I'm available?
For the next six weeks I'm back in the corporate saddle. Filling in for someone on leave during THE. WORST. TIME. in the industry. Nothing screams Fun like January One.
So, once again, I'm doing what I hate (but secretly love now that it's temporary, funny how that works.) And who doesn't need cash during the Holidays?!
I honestly can't believe my good fortune. I wasn't looking. But I'm working. I'm working for people who are looking. And can't find it. When opportunity knocks it is incumbent upon us to answer. Hospitality is one of the greatest lessons of the Season.
This is what I did today. There's more to the story. Like how I worked with this group on behalf of The Community Arts Project. And none of us knew until I walked in. And that this picture was taken less than .02 miles from my house. Coincidence, luck, good fortune, blessed. Call it what you will. I am grateful. The moral of the story is simple. And it isn't lost on me.
