We've Come A Long Way, Baby

An interesting look at the intersection of history, art, and politics.

With the election looming large, I thought it would be fun to revisit the women's suffrage movement through the use of cartoons and imagery.

A lot of parallels can be drawn from this but I'll leave that up to you.

Instead, form your own opinions and running commentary while enjoying these images in BuzzFeed Politics

Or this kick ass cartoon history lesson from School House Rock!!!

The internet is full of examples like this. Fascinating for those who care about where we've been. And don't want to go there again.

A Look at My Early Stripes

1980 Greenville-Spartanburg Airport
In honor of tonight's debate, a glimpse of my first brush with politics...

Like all good Southern girls, I was raised to be Republican.

I'm sure my parents are wondering what happened on a number of fronts...

That's me second from left (the shortest of the bunch some things do stay the same) having a moment with Strom. He liked me.

Rounding out the GOP photo op with good ol' SC Senator Strom Thurmond are VP George H W Bush and SC Governor Carroll Campbell.

On October 14, 1980, the Reagan campaign stopped in Spartanburg, SC, for a speaking engagement at Wofford College by then Vice Presidential Hopeful George HW Bush who, of course, went on to become President, as did his son, George W.

Art Imitating Life

Marc Chegall, Born July 7, 1887
Through the mind of Marc Chegall, the famous Russian born French artist who just so happens to share my birthday:

"All colors are the friends of their neighbors and the lovers of their opposites."

"I work in whatever medium likes me at the moment."

"Only love interests me, and I am only in contact with things that revolve around love."

"Mine alone is the country of my soul."

"I have always painted pictures where human love floods my colors."

"The habit of ignoring Nature is deeply implanted in our times. This attitude reminds me of people who never look you in the eye; I find them disturbing and always have to look away."

"My name is Marc, my emotional life is sensitive and my purse is empty, but they say I have talent." **My personal favorite**

Wouldn't it be great if art did imitate life? Considering all of the polar opposites these days in politics, love, wealth, society... we could learn a thing or two from him.

The Art of Change

9/26/2012

A year has passed since I started writing. Time is behaving like a dancing water bead that can't roll off the elephant ear fast enough. If only I could watch in slow motion. But the world won't stop so my only choice is to enjoy the ride. Not to sound cliche but I am becoming more aware of how precious and fleeting it is. And by it I mean life, love, our time on the planet. I'm also aware of how fast things change. When I started this a year ago, we were fresh off our move from Texas with a brand new lease on life, cancer free (my partner) and forty (me). We left our temporary digs and started work on our new house. We've moved more times than I can count and bought and sold every step of the way, thanks in large part to our incredible luck with real estate (may it continue knock on wood) and unpacking meant, you guessed it, more change. Changing this, changing that, transforming this, everything is a project. We picked up another project, too, a little cottage, and a part time job to boot. All of which is ongoing and subject to change, of course. A friend recently said something that struck me and has become my mantra. When filling her in on what I was up to, I commented "so this is what I'm doing now. We'll see how it long it lasts." Her response was classic: "I don't really like for things to last." A woman after my beating heart. Neither do I. I'm a champion of change. I need it. I thrive on it. I embrace it. I love it.

There's an art to it. I'm perfecting my brushstroke. Nothing lasts forever. You can put that on my tombstone.

A while back I found these at ReFunked Junk in The Depot at Gibson Mill. They both pretty much say it all. However, to the one on the left, I prefer to say I start a lot of stuff.

Evening Cruise on Lake Norman
to bring you Summer in progress.

On the lake.
At the beach.
In the mountains.

See you in the Fall!

Dear readers, please forgive me while I ignore my creative pursuits in favor of some fun in the sun. I'll be back with a tan, I promise.

The Eyes Have It

The only summer regimen I need
Every year around this time I start obsessing about my weight -- it's Summer and Swimsuit season who can blame me? It's also around this time I start analyzing my beauty routine. I guess I assume it's easier to change that than my waist. Improvements elsewhere will overcome my lack of success on the scale. You would think after 40 years of living, more than half spent in makeup, I wouldn't fall victim to this line of thinking. But I do. One trip to Sephora is all it takes to be weak in the knees for the newest product. And even though experience has taught me the only noticeable difference occurs in my wallet, experience goes right out the window. Because here I am buying a bag full of make-me-over-from-head-to-toe sure to disappoint and make me cash poor. When will I learn?

The eyes have it. They always have. It's the one thing I can count on not to let me down -- that, and my sparkling personality, of course. Bikinis, be damned!

And these eyes need only mascara. No eyeliner, no eye shadow, just mascara. Maybelline Full 'N Soft to be exact.

So, take it from me. Trust yourself and go with what works. Save the money. Opt for cute earrings and a cover up, instead.

Note to readers: I LOVE SEPHORA! Seriously, I get an endorphin rush just being there!

Five Foot Nothing.............

4/2/2012

We've all seen it. Pictures hung too high on a wall. You walk into a room and the first thing you notice is the crick in your neck from looking up. Let's face it, there aren't too many prizes for being short in this world. You can't be a model, everyone looks down on you, and heaven forbid you grow a gray hair. The whole world sees it before you do. But one thing you can be certain of is not breaking the cardinal rule of decorating. Eye level doesn't apply to everyone, folks. Just those of us hovering close to the ground. So celebrate your five foot nothing-ness, as my brother would say, and keep your eye on the wall.

Consider the museum rule when it comes to hanging pictures and center it 60-65 inches off the ground

Open Letter to Family and Friends for The Community Arts Project!

I serve on the board for an awesome non-profit working hard to ensure that art remains part of the fabric of the Northern Mecklenburg/Lake Norman region. Located in the historic Oak Street Mill building in beautiful downtown Cornelius, NC, we are The Community Arts Project! If you haven't heard of us, I highly recommend you check us out after reading this plea. Whether you are an artist who would like to use our facilities during Open Studio time, want to take a class, or have kids and need summer camp options, we have something for everyone -- of all ages!

I'd also like you to make plans to be a part of our organization in a special way:

We have a very important event coming up tomorrow night, March 22 from 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm. Our annual A Taste Of Art event, held at The Fresh Market in Cornelius (20623 Torrence Chapel Rd), is our biggest fundraiser of the year. We really depend on the money raised at this event each year in our budget. These funds are crucial to our non-profit’s success. Every dollar helps, so if you are not able to attend, please consider making a monetary donation to CAP at this time. We will provide you with a tax-deductible receipt.

We know you agree that the Arts are an important component in any thriving community and trust you will help us continue to bring the Arts to the Lake Norman area for many years to come. If you are able to attend, you won’t want to miss this casual evening full of art, food and fun! A Silent Auction and raffle will include art and other amazing items. Delicious hors d’oeuvres and wine pairings from a variety of vineyards are included in your $30 ticket price. The full price of admission goes directly to CAP as a fundraiser. The Fresh Market does a wonderful job as host and we can not thank them enough for their support.

To get your tickets contact me or call the office directly at 704-896-8823 and ask for Cathy or Tracy. A limited number of tickets will be available for purchase at the door. For your convenience, you may also buy tickets at the store with credit or debit.

Join me in supporting this wonderful organization! Donations may be mailed to 19725 Oak St. Unit 1, Cornelius, NC 28031. Thank you in advance for your support of The Community Arts Project.

The Community Arts Project is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization Tax-ID # 56-2367223

I am in LOVE with Not Made in China, the brainchild of designer Nikki Mueller, and her tongue in cheek approach to this fine city. And by this fine city I mean Charlotte, of course. Particularly humorous are her slogans for area neighborhoods, which, let's face it, are spot on if we're not taking ourselves too seriously.

Her popularity has exploded since last year but if you're not familiar with her work, I am happy to introduce you.
Picture
You know it's true!

Watch her Button Lady segment here on Charlotte Today

By the way, this is my least favorite local show on TV -- Love you Colleen Odegaard but that guy has got to go!
Picture
Also on the receiving end of her funny form of flattery are Asheville, Columbia, South Carolina, the South (all to which I can relate and assure you the humor is accurate), as well as the upcoming DNC.

You can find her at local shops, the Visitors Center, and Etsy. For more about her check out her website.

Love her! You should too.

1970 my Mom striking a pose on my Dad's bike
Yesterday my Mom turned 73. She doesn't look or act it.
She's as hip today as she was then. With the exception of my childhood when she was an uptight drill sergeant.
I get it now. Not so much then.

Happy Birthday to the coolest Mom I know! I love you.
